To Deadman and Beyond

This route has you camping up at Deadman Pass (or driving up pretty early). The route has an elevation MINIMUM of 7523 feet and has 8100 feet of climbing over 98 miles. Although the air is thin (and fast), the climbing is quite hard. Most of the route is at over 9000 feet, so the exposure is intense.

We tried to add on a few other items to this loop like Jelm Mountain but didn’t have the gearing to make it to the top. It was really really beautiful. We packed a water filter and were able to fill up several times in the creeks.

The Stats:

  • Distance: 98 miles

  • Paved: 12%

  • Climbing: 8100 feet

Notes:

  • Elevation. Your body is working really hard at elevation and it’s essential to stay on top of fueling. Becoming dehydrated is really common and with this much climbing can lead to a very long day. Pack extra hydration mix.

  • Mountains. The weather can change swiftly and unpredictably. Have a plan and a time buffer. Also have layers…even if the high for the day looks good, it cools off extremely fast.

The Eliel Gibraltar Vest and some long-fingered gloves are easy options to throw in a handlebar bag. Use “BikeSports10” to save 10%.

Refills: There is a small store in Jelm (it was closed when we passed through). Would recommend bringing enough food and bring a filter.

Tires: Although there is a some fine gravel, there is also some pretty messed up remote roads. You’ll have more confidence and safety going bigger for this route…like a 42 WTB Resolute. ENVE G23s will also make this wicked fun.
