Super Estes

Climbing from Fort Collins up to Masonville, then South to the Big Thompson Canyon. The classic way up to Estes going up Big Thompson canyon, Highway 34, and then up the switchbacks of Devils Gulch through Glenhaven. Popping out in the town of Estes Park there’s plenty of places to refuel, our favorite being Kind Coffee. From Estes the short way back is coming back down Highway 34 but the “super” part of this being climbing out of Estes Park up Peak to Peak Highway and then eventually descending down to Lyons. From Lyons you’re back to the plains and heading north towards Carter Lake and back to Horsetooth.

The Stats:

  • Distance: 124 miles

  • Paved: 100%

  • Climbing: 9000 feet

Notes: This route can stay pretty clear early through early winter some years. Best to do some research and have a plan. Again, mountains. Check the weather, have a plan, and potentially layers.

Refills: There is water all over this course at country stores and towns along the way.

Tires: Something like a WTB Exposure 30mm would be super fun. The roads are all pretty good so a fast slick road tire is best.
