Sand Creek to Deadman Pass

One of the most fun, quintessential gravel routes in Gravel Graceland. Starting from Fort Collins is doable but very epic. This route starts at a Wildlife parking lot up Cherokee Park Road, climbs up the rest of Cherokee Park past the summit then turning up Sand Creek Pass to the south of Cherokee Park. Sand Creek is a steep climb with pitches and creek crossings. It’s a bit shorter than Deadman Pass from the east by feel, popping out near the top of Deadman Pass is a relief once you figure out where you are. This route has a very fun semi unknown descent off of Deadman pass onto trails in Beaver Meadows. Be careful on the single track but have fun, also look up the status of Beaver Meadows, it’s been for sale for quite some time and may become private at some point.

The Stats:

  • Distance: 66 miles

  • Paved: 0%

  • Climbing: 7484 feet

Notes: High mountain route, not clear until late May/June.

Refills: No services on course. Bring a filter. You can fill up at a variety of high mountain streams. If you go a bit further down Deadman Pass you’ll hit Red Feather Lakes and there is a store but it’s out of the way in this particular route.

Tires: Go big. A 40mm or bigger WTB Resolute or Nano would be our choice. You will want some climbing lugs on Sand Creek Pass.
