Classic Pennock Pass

Climbing from Fort Collins up to Masonville, then up Buckhorn Canyon, staying in Buckhorn canyon all the way up to the top of Pennock pass at 10k+ feet. This classic route has a ton of pavement but the special bits, Pennock Pass, and Pingree Park road are all dirt. Water stops at the Masonville store. There is also water from a faucet well 11 miles up from the start of the dirt on Pennock Pass at the white ranger station on the left side of the road, about 50 yards off the road. More water at an artesian well about 8 miles down Pingree park road but that is under construction and a full refuel at the Mishawaka or Poudre Park stores.

This route is a part of the 2024 FoCo Fondo Training Ride Series (June - Longer Route).

The Stats:

  • Distance: 92 miles

  • Paved: 40%

  • Climbing: 6000 feet

Notes: This route can stay pretty clear early through early winter some years. Best to do some research and have a plan. Again, mountains. Check the weather, have a plan, and potentially layers.

Refills: There is water at the Ranger Station about 2/3 up Pennock on the left, food/drinks at the Mish, and Ted’s Place.

Tires: Something like a WTB Vulpine in a 36 would be super fun. Pennock usually super smooth. The descent after and through Pingree can be rough.
